Philipsdorp

Philipsdorp (Philips Village) is located just outside the Strijp-S district, the former Philips factory site. People from all over the Netherlands came to Eindhoven to work for Philips. The company’s goal was to take care of its employees from cradle to grave, starting with one of the most important necessities of life: a home. Philips bought a piece of land opposite the original light bulb factory (now the Philips Museum) and from 1910, under the direction of various architects, the construction of Philipsdorp began, consisting of small but sturdy workers’ houses.

At the time, it was not common for women to work, so the neighborhood was designed to create a sense of togetherness. For example, you will find many small squares and playgrounds and the small streets give you the feeling that you are inside. You can also see that the houses have no (or small) front gardens. Most of the people who came to Eindhoven to work for Philips were originally farmers and needed a vegetable garden at the back of the house. At the time, a front garden stood for status and luxury.

In addition to housing within walking distance of the factory, there were Philips schools, a Philips library, a Philips leisure center, a Philips business school, a Philips grocery store, Philips luxury homes (for seniors) and a Philips sports club. The football club “PSV” comes from the sports association, whose abbreviation stands for: Philips Sports Association.
